The Spread Eagle, Greenwich, London

It would be safe to say that South East London is not famed for an array of great restaurants. There are, however, a handful of places which have acquired a reputation for being actually quite good.

Among them is the Spread Eagle in Greenwich. Since its refurb a couple of years ago it has lost a little of the beautiful, creaky, old world charm and cosiness. The food is still French and delicious

Christopher’s, Wellington Street, London

Before Jack arrived my only experience of Christopher’s had been business lunches. Its American-style surf and turf menu, efficient service and great location make it a perfect choice for that kind of dining.

Not surprisingly I wasn’t convinced it would be an ideal choice with a baby in tow. We picked a weekend lunchtime which turned out to be a popular time to go with kids as we weren’t the only ones. The restaurant is up a set of spiral steps to it’s best to leave the buggy downstairs. It is advisable to take the baby with you, though

Joe Allen, Exeter Street, London

Joe Allen’s has built an enviable reputation for pre- and post-theatre dining both in London and New York. If you go late you can usually spot a West End or Broadway star or two who are likely to have come straight from the theatre. Maybe it is precisely because they are used to feeding people at slightly unusual hours and dealing with people who just want a nice meal and good company, that they are good with children and babies

  • Willi’s Coffee House, Clayton Road, Jesmond

Willi’s Coffee House is not far from the centre of Jesmond and about fifteen minutes walk from the centre of Newcastle.

Willi’s is a great coffee shop: wooden, shabby, comfortable and warm. It isn’t huge. It offers take out and eat in options and is a bit pricy as coffee shops go – but worth every penny.
Willi’s does a great selection of fresh salads and sandwiches, jacket potatoes and homemade soup. It also does breakfasts all day, and delivers platters and buffets. There is a children’s menu which includes things like pizza, pasta, chips and cheese on toast
