Stewart & Co, Morpeth, Northumberland

Stewart & Co. at Meldon Park is an amazing child-friendly food-loving garden-enjoying find on the way to Wallington Hall from Morpeth. It’s in the Meldon Park estate, which has been in the hands of the Cookson family since 1832 and is particularly beautiful with wonderful views, a walled kitchen garden, walks and a shop selling local produce

Le Cave du Vin, Morpeth, Northumberland

La Cave du Vin is a relatively new restaurant/bar in Morpeth. When you walk in there is a bar area and seating with sofas and low lighting, and at the back there is a raised platform area with curtains and bright paintings. It’s like being on holiday somewhere exotic. We sat just below the raised platform at a very wonky table which we managed to adjust on the flagstone floor until it was right. Every table has a candle on it and there are beautiful metal lamps dotted about and plants

  • Shillibeers, Carpenter’s Mews, London, N6

Friends of ours had invited us to join them and Adelie, their two year old, on a trip to the Pleasance Theatre to see a production of Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler’s Room on The Broom. It was Jack’s first trip to a proper theatre and he was transfixed.

After all that excitement the children (not to mention their parents) were ready for some lunch. The Pleasance Theatre is tucked in Carpenter’s Mews off Caledonian Road and hungry tummies dictated the nearest eaterie had better be up to the job
