The lovely Amy Purdie, owner of Whiteacres Design and mum to Lyra, write’s BDO’s first fish and chip shop review:

There are three principles which govern the running of Pantrinis Fish and Chips:

  1. Provide value for money
  2. Look after the customers and
  3. Insist on quality ingredients.

We visited last week and I would say that these principles are still adhered to in the running of this family business which has been going since 1920. You can read all about the history on the website and there’s a lot to say!

We’ve been to Pantrinis many, many times before and if pushed would probably describe it as our favourite fish and chip shop. We’ve rarely sat in though, instead choosing to take out and walk in the park looking out across the sea and dodging the seagulls. This time though it was 6.30pm, dark, cold and we had Lyra with us, so we sat inside.

You order at the counter, but that’s not a problem as it’s brought to your table. We obviously ordered fish and chips, although there are lots of other nice things available too, and it was about £15 with tea, bread and butter and gravy for my husband. Lyra just ate some of mine. To start with we were the only people in so we were spoilt for choice with where to sit, but by the time we left there were more people about. We used the changing facilities before the food arrived and they were very clean and spacious.

We had carried Lyra in rather than using the buggy – the nearest car park is a short walk, and I’m not sure where a buggy would fit if it was busy. The restaurant was very clean and was the highchair. The food arrived quickly and was lovely, I even ate all of the chips (a rarity). Lyra also ate some of the fish, a couple of chips and some bread and butter with no complaint – and she’s quite fussy with her food! They do kids meals too, so once she actually starts eating more it’ll be worth getting her one of those.

We had to get away to put Lyra to bed, so no puddings, but it was a very successful trip so I’m sure we’ll be back!

  • Canteen, Royal Festival Hall, London

If you’re travelling to or from South London via Waterloo Station the revamped area around the Royal Festival Hall is a great place for a pit stop. Canteen is located round the back of the Festival Hall away from the melee of the riverside, which is a relief if you’ve spent the last few hours fighting your way through crowded streets with a buggy
